To the editor: The high academic standards that MCAS has set for all students regardless of where they go to school creates much needed equity in our 300-plus school districts.
Since 2003, there has been an increase in graduation rates and a decrease in drop-out rates. Massachusetts has catapulted to first place in national rankings of school achievement for kindergarten through 12th grade. If Question 2 passes, the only statewide high school graduation requirement would be four years of gym. Massachusetts would have lower statewide graduation requirements than Mississippi and Alabama.
I urge voters to do their homework. There is a reason why our state leaders — Gov. Maura Healey, Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, Attorney General Andrea Campbell, Senate president, speaker of the House and many other education professionals — oppose Question 2.
